Digital Independence Day

At the 39c3 Marc-Uwe Kling and friends announced the Digital Independence Day. On every Sunday of the month, every person is supposed to try to free themselves from one Big-Tech product and switch to a freer alternative. So one month it could be your goal to get away from Gmail and switch to Proton-Mail or Tuta, switch from Twitter to Mastodon, or leave WhatsApp for Matrix. To help with the transition many Hackspaces are volunteering their time.

My local Hackspace, the C3D2, is also taking part in the action and on the 04.01.2026 from 14:00 to 16:00 we'll be helping people install Linux, discover the Fediverse and switch to Matrix. The Datenpunks Dresden will also be represented.

This not only helps helps people protect themselves digitally, but also strengthens the local community. So if you are interested, check if your local Hackspace is supporting DI-Day and maybe swing by some time.
